A World War 2 bomb has exploded in Germany after three quarters of a century

A crater has appeared in a field in Germany after a bomb from the Second World War exploded.

The bomb went off in the middle of the night three quarters of a century after it was dropped.

Police said on Monday that the crater was discovered on Sunday afternoon near Limburg in central Germany. There was no indication it was caused by farm machinery or any other tools.

However, residents reporting hearing a loud explosion and feeling a blast in the early hours of Sunday, June 23. Thankfully, no-one was hurt.

Local reports have said that explosive clearance experts examined the crater and were able to confirm it was made by a bomb. It measured 10 meters (33 feet) wide and four metres (13 feet) deep.

No-one was hurt by the explosion (EPA)

The experts believe it was a 250kg bomb that failed to detonate because it hit soft soil rather than a hard surface.

It seems that a decaying detonator finally triggered the explosion.

The bomb was probably sunk several meters underground when it exploded.

More than 70 years after the end of the war, unexploded bombs are still being found frequently in Germany.
