Goodbye MCU Spider-Man, Hello ‘Matrix 4’

Two absolutely bonkers pieces of blockbuster movies news just dropped, two announcements that are really bad or ironically great depending on who you are. But since there aren’t that many details to them yet beyond the initial headline, we’ll just tell you about both of them right now in one spot.

First, it appears Spider-Man about the exit the MCU. Given Sony’s controlling stake in the character, having Peter Parker in the Disney-owned Marvel Cinematic Universe was always a bit tense. The two studios had to come to an agreement in 2015. However, despite Spider-Man: Far From Home’s billion-dollar box office haul being the biggest yet for the character and the company (they just announced a theatrical re-release) Deadline reports that Sony is ending its partnership with Marvel and taking Spider-Man with them.  Disney apparently wanted exponentially more control. Maybe Spidey shouldn’t have killed so many people in Avengers: Endgame.

So while Tom Holland’s Spider-Man may not pal around with the Avengers anymore, perhaps this opens the door to him fighting Tom Hardy Venom and Jared Leto Morbius. Yeah! Can you imagine if they have to recast again? Or maybe Disney will just pull a Fox and buy Sony outright so nerds will cheer on the monopoly if it lets Kraven the Hunter fight Wolverine or whatever. Yeah! At least those Spider-Man TV shows sound neat.

This news alone was already an emotional shock, but then moments later we learned that a fourth Matrix movie is now a go according to Variety, and the roller coaster ride got even wilder.

Co-director Lana Wachowski returns along with Carrie-Anne Moss and Neo himself Keanu Reeves, who’s really having a quite a breathtaking year this year. Earlier rumors for new Matrix movies suggested the film would be a young Morpheus prequel starring Michael B. Jordan. But these original actors seem to indicate Matrix 4 will go the legacy sequel route like Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Anyway, all this should just inspire everyone to rewatch Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 and The Wachowski’s Speed Racer, two truly perfect and beautiful films.
